Dr. Marianne Stecher-Hansen

Professor Stecher-Hansen has been instrumental in establishing the Scan Design Foundation Fellowship Program. Faculty from Political Science and History, to Architecture and Urban Planning, Engineering and Environmental Studies are working with Marianne to build strong ties with four (4) Danish Universities and develop a world class exchange program for University of Washington undergraduate and graduate students.
Dr. Marianne Stølen
University of Washington- Scan|Design Fellowship Program - Denmark Coordinator.
As a native born Danish citizen who has lived much or her life in Copenhagen, Marianne is well positioned to offer American students an introduction to Denmark and Scandinavian culture. She received her Master's degree from Copenhagen University in English. Her strong ties to the Danish-American community in Seattle go back to her graduate student days in the Scandinavian Studies Department at the University of Washington (1982-84). From 1984-1990, she served as Visiting Lecturer in the Scandinavian Department at UC Berkeley and received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Washington's Scandinavian Studies Department in 1990. From 1997-2001 she taught at the University of Washington's Scandinavian Studies Departmnent as the Visiting Lecturer in Danish. Since 2001, she has been teaching as an affiliate faculty member of the Nordic Institute at Copenhagen University, including Scandinavian Area Studies courses offered for international students.
Christina Oh

Political Science Department - Spring 2007.
As a Scan|Design Fellow at the University of Aarhus during the Spring semester 2007, Christina Oh studied Danish politics and Denmark's welfare state and began learning to speak the difficult Danish language. She enjoyed meeting Danish university students in the Department of Political Science and especially loved the dinners and events coordinated by Dr. Marianne Stølen for the UW Scan|Design fellows. Now back at the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington, Christina is currently writing her senior research paper dealing with environmental norms in Scandinavia and is continuing the study of Danish. She is in the process of applying to graduate schools and plans to begin a masters program at a university in Scandinavia in the autumn of 2008.
Lisa Dulude

Architecture School - Spring 2007.
Lisa Delude, a graduate student in Urban Design and Planning, is currently finishing her master's thesis on bicycle commuting and wrapping up her final semester at the University of Washington. As a Scan|Design fellow at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, she studied bicycling and transportation policies in Denmark in preparation for her Master's thesis project. She also enjoyed meeting Danish and other international students a the architecture school in Copenhage, traveling in Europe, and the Danish bakeries! Lisa feels that her first-hand experiences of Danish transportation systems will be valuable in her future career pursuits as an urban planner.
Melissa Lucas

Scandinavian Department - Spring 2007.
Melissa Lucas is pursuing a Master's degree in Scandinavian Studies at the University of Washington, with a focus on Danish language and literature. Melissa has a background in German, Linguistics, and Speech Pathology. She speaks Danish, some German, Norwegian, and Swedish. As a Scan|Design fellow at the University of Copenhagen during Spring semester 2007, Melisssa studied advanced Danish language & literature and focused both on Danish Phonetics and the Danish short story. Her professional goal is to teach in Academia. Fall quarter 2007, Melissa taught DANISH 101 as an evening class at the University of Washington, a Teaching Assistantship supported by the Scan|Design Foundation.
Peter Leonard

Scandinavian Department - Spring 2007.
Peter Leonard is a Ph.D. student in Scandinavian Studies at the University of Washington where he studies Swedish and Danish literature. As a Scan|Design fellow during the Spring semester 2007, Peter took courses in the departments of Comparative Literature and Danish Literature at the University of Copenhagen. In addition to coursework and research for his doctoral thesis, Peter interned at the University of Copenhagen's academic press, Museum Tuscalanums Forlag. He is now spending a year abroad in Sweden as a Fulbright Fellow. An archive of his time in Denmark is avalable online at: Peter Leonard Blog.
Samantha Albert

Film and Media Studies Program - Spring 2007.
Samantha Albert is an advanced undergraduate in Cinema Studies at the University of Washington. As a Scan|Design Fellow during the Spring semester 2007, she studied at the Film and Media Studies program at the Univeristy of Copenhagen, a graduate program taught in English. Among her courses were Danish Cinema and Minorities and Postcolonial issues in recent French cinema. Although she speaks German, Samantha had not previously studied or lived in Denmark. Samanth is back at the University of Washington during Fall quarter 2007, completing her undergraduate degree. Her professional goal is to work in film production.
Todd Beyreuther
Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark
Architecture School - Fall 2007.
Todd is a University of Washington graduate student in architecture finishing his thesis project at the School of Architecture at the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Todd is using his thesis preparation work at the University of Washington that focused on global and urban scale "nomadism" to design a mobile living module at the Royal Academy in a department that focuses on Danish industrial design. In December, at the end of the semester, Todd will bring his models and presentation materials back from Denmark to the University of Washington for his final thesis review.
